The Social Media Take Over

Social Media has taken over the Internet. Many people have Facebook set as their homepage and it is their entry point to the Internet. As a support technician for and ISP we have received calls from customers claiming that their Internet services is ‘down’ or not working if the Facebook page will not load or if they can’t get logged into Facebook. They just don’t know of any other way on the Internet. They don’t use traditional email or chat programs, they instead use the Facebook chat or private messages. They don’t have a personal webpage or blog, they post to the Wall on Facebook. This becomes a problem for the support technician in all areas as we need to be aware when Facebook is ‘down’ and when changes are made to the service. As other social media services like Google+ grow in popularity we will need to be aware of that service too.
