Warpped ClockIn the new year many resolutions will include something about managing time. As a support technician it is important to manage your time and it can easily get away from you.

If you go to the client’s location to fix computers it is easy to get off task and spend more time then planned. If you spend all your time in front of the computer you can find your  time lost looking an websites that are not related to the task at hand. If you are on the phone with the customer you will find yourself spending too much time with just one customer.

Programs you should get on your new computer

new computerDid you get a new computer for Christmas? Are you setting up a new computer for someone? We got a list of free programs that you should put on the new computer for the not-techie person and a list for the techie person.

The first thing you need to do is uninstall all those programs that come on the computer that are shareware and trialware and just advertisements. Directions for removing all this junk software is in a great PCWorld article.

The Social Media Take Over

Social Media ExplainedSocial Media has taken over the Internet. Many people have Facebook set as their homepage and it is their entry point to the Internet. As a support technician for and ISP we have received calls from customers claiming that their Internet services is ‘down’ or not working if the Facebook page will not load or if they can’t get logged into Facebook. They just don’t know of any other way on the Internet. They don’t use traditional email or chat programs, they instead use the Facebook chat or private messages. They don’t have a personal webpage or blog, they post to the Wall on Facebook. This becomes a problem for the support technician in all areas as we need to be aware when Facebook is ‘down’ and when changes are made to the service. As other social media services like Google+ grow in popularity we will need to be aware of that service too.

Online Video Consumption

RokuFor Christmas there will be many people getting a new Internet ready TV, or an Roku box, or a new XBox (or other gaming system) and they will be using these devices to stream video from service like Netflix, Amazon InstantVideo, YouTube, and other services. There has been a jump in these services. Recently ISP’s have had to increase there offerings of bandwidth as more and more people are watching video only.
