IPv6 is coming……

We are running out of IP addresses. We will soon not be able to add any computers, or websites, or other services to the Internet using the current method of IP addressing. That is why for the past few years the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and network technicians around the world have been working on IPv6.

So instead of a Google DNS IP address of 173.194.73.106 it will be 2001:4860:0:1001::68

While currently this change to IPv6 will not affect the average consumer, and therefore will not effect those of us in technical support, but as more of this is in the news we might be needed to explain it to the public.

How to get into your computer’s BIOS

BIOS chipWhen working on a computer, from time to time, you might need to get into the computer BIOS.  You might need to reset the time, or change the boot order, or other changes. BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System firmware of an IBM PC-compatible computer. There are different type of BIOS and there are different ways of accessing those BIOS. Cyberwalker.com has an article that gives us more information about accessing these different BIOS.

Support Kindle Fire

Kindle FireThe hot new tech gift this Christmas is the Kindle Fire. They are the gift for those who don’t already have an iPad (or other tablet) or if they could afford the more expensive tablets. The Kindle Fire is under $200 and is a great gift. For technical support this means that this season we will be receive calls from customers wanting help setting up their wifi connection or setting up their email.

I found the Amazon Kindle Fire Support website some what helpful in some areas, but more detailed in other areas. Below is a list of websites where I found the most useful information for setting up and changing settings on that new Kindle Fire that your customer got for Christmas. Always remember though that being a new device that the customer might need to contact Kindle Support. In the United States the phone number is 1-866-321-8851.

Black Friday

Black FridayToday, in the United States, is know as Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving where many people go shopping and this is the point that many retailer finally have their profits in the ‘black’ (or positive profit numbers).

I have this day off from work as a holiday. I will be sleeping off my turkey feast. For those that are working we salute you. You might be working with customer’s this morning (part of an all hands on the floor) or you might be getting frantic calls from stores managers whose has registers not working or the network down.
