Warpped ClockIn the new year many resolutions will include something about managing time. As a support technician it is important to manage your time and it can easily get away from you.

If you go to the client’s location to fix computers it is easy to get off task and spend more time then planned. If you spend all your time in front of the computer you can find your  time lost looking an websites that are not related to the task at hand. If you are on the phone with the customer you will find yourself spending too much time with just one customer.

Web Design Tools

If you are provide support for web-hosting, support websites, or design websites, we have in infographic of the post popular programs and services use by web designers.  The programs I like to use are Google Docs & Open Office (where one falls short I use the other), GIMP, Evernote, Notepad ++, Windows Live Movie Maker, Freshbooks, GMail. While these might not be the best programs to do these task, they are the cheapest. Also don’t forget how social networking tools can be useful too. Using s service like Skype or now Google Hangout to video conference with your customers.

The Social Media Take Over

Social Media ExplainedSocial Media has taken over the Internet. Many people have Facebook set as their homepage and it is their entry point to the Internet. As a support technician for and ISP we have received calls from customers claiming that their Internet services is ‘down’ or not working if the Facebook page will not load or if they can’t get logged into Facebook. They just don’t know of any other way on the Internet. They don’t use traditional email or chat programs, they instead use the Facebook chat or private messages. They don’t have a personal webpage or blog, they post to the Wall on Facebook. This becomes a problem for the support technician in all areas as we need to be aware when Facebook is ‘down’ and when changes are made to the service. As other social media services like Google+ grow in popularity we will need to be aware of that service too.

Facebook

FacebookFacebook has taken over the Internet in a big way. In a short period of time it has grown to over 800 million active users. There are over 2 billion post a day. People access their Facebook account on their computer at home and at work. They access it on their cell phones, on tablet computers. We keep finding new devices that get Internet access, and as soon as they get Internet access they get Facebook access.
